The Hamburg Public Library is excited to announce the launch of “Our Next Chapter,” a capital campaign designed to fund a significant building project to expand and modernize its historic facility. It is about creating a warm, welcoming environment with upgraded facilities, improved accessibility, and modern amenities to meet the needs of the growing community. After 120 years, the library is thrilled to finally become fully accessible, ensuring that every member of the community can benefit from the resources it offers.
The expansion project will enhance the library’s ability to serve Hamburg’s residents by offering more space for programs, improved technology, and a more inclusive environment. “Our library is the heartbeat of our community,” remarks Sharon Shirk, Campaign Co-Chair and Library Trustee. “It’s where children discover the joy of reading, families bond over stories, and neighbors connect. But we need your support to make our vision a reality.”
In 1903, the Hamburg community envisioned creating one of the first libraries in Berks County, a place where knowledge would be accessible to everyone. With determination, they approached Andrew Carnegie to finance the library’s construction, while the town committed to its ongoing support. This vision became a reality on November 5, 1904, when the historic library opened its doors, welcoming over 500 visitors.
For over a century, the Hamburg Public Library has been a cornerstone of the community, providing a center for learning, cultural enrichment, and personal growth. As the town evolves, so do the needs and demands placed upon the library. Since 2019, the library has seen a dramatic increase in usage, highlighting the growing importance of its services.
However, just as in 1903, the library cannot achieve this milestone alone. It needs the support of the community to turn this vision into reality. Whether through financial contributions, spreading the word, or volunteering time, community involvement is crucial to the success of this project.
